"Wow, so like where have you been?"
I know, it's been a while. Long story short, I am a college graduate, I have real work experience, and I've been doing some traveling. Look at her being an adult. We love a well rounded queen! Back to the point of this blog post. Upon the great amounts of fashion inspiration that I have received from February 2020's New York Fashion Week, I've decided I want to write about my trip to New York last September. Note that this post will contain affiliate links and widgets to items that I wore or used during the trip. You can directly click on my pictures to find out where I got some of my clothes from that I styled. Listen, I know the September 2019 New York Fashion Week was at the beginning of the month, but I ended up taking the trip later that month. I would have loved to see more Fashion Week street style while I was there but it genuinely was the best time for my first visit.
I've always wanted to visit New York, and you can tell by my Travel Pinterest boards that it was one of my top places to visit. So while I was working during my first year out of university, I saved up to spend four days in Brooklyn, New York by myself. That amount of time really isn't much but I really made the most of it and I've already decided I want to make it a regular trip to see some friends out there. These are some of the things I did and would highly recommend for a first time solo trip or future trips.
My best tip when visiting New York is to get an Airbnb instead of a hotel. Other than being way cheaper than a hotel, some Airbnb's are located in way cooler parts of the city, especially Brooklyn. You get to learn more about residential areas and communities and you get to feel a bit more like a local. I found a nice little place close to multiple subway stops. Another pro tip is just use Google maps to help with navigating transportation. I had a week Metro Pass that I bought as soon as I landed and was able to easily navigate to the place I was staying at and everywhere else with my phone. I only used Uber once to get to the airport for my departure back to California.
One gem that I found was The Frick Collection Museum on the Upper East Side. Look up free museum days or pay as you wish days for popular museums around the city. You get to experience some culture, great pictures, and for a cheaper price.
If it's your first visit, you'll most likely spend your time in the heart of Manhattan or Brooklyn, in either find food places on Yelp or through local recommendations. I tried a really good Italian place called Ortomare Risterante Pizzeria while meeting up with a friend by Columbia University and a really popular Moroccan place in Brooklyn called Cafe Mogador Williamsburg. If you're more interested in cafe's try Milk and Pull in Bed Stuy or Supermoon Bakehouse.
Another gem I could give you is visit those free touristy places. Or even sign up for a tour with a guide for places you're really interested in, I took a book tour experience through Airbnb. I understand that not a lot of people like more crowded places like that, but they make great memories and pictures. I went during the last full week of September and I don't think some of these places are as crowded during other times of the year, say during Fashion Week. Plus the weather was really nice my whole time there. Central Park, the Brooklyn Bridge, Grand Central Station, and even Times Square are great options to take pictures at different angles. Also some of the places around there such as Dumbo, Midtown Manhattan, and the Upper East Side are interesting to explore because they are so different from each other, you'd think you were in different cities.
This day was especially warm and I did most of my sightseeing alone. I opted for a light golden yellow knit sweater and brown suede skirt from Old Navy as well as the same black and white Vans I wore for the whole trip. This look was versatile and comfortable enough for me to walk around in and have dinner in a nice restaurant.
For this all black outfit, I was able to meet up with my friend for a walk on the bridge then for window shopping, sight seeing, and drinks around Time's Square. I knew I'd be walking a lot and that it would get cold later so I opted for a Chidish Gambino tshirt I got from his concert, black biker shorts from Old Navy, and a black leather jacket from Forever21.
This final look might just be my favorite and most of what I was wearing was from Forever21. The warm taupe duster, white baby tank, and brown suede bag was from Forever21. Ripped jeans were from Old Navy and shoes were Vans. And again this look worked well with the warm weather because I could take off my coat duster as well as take pictures, go to a cute cafe, trendy restaurant and a bar. Check out that shot of Central Park that I took from the top of Belvedere Castle. Did I mention I got to watch H.E.R.'s entire rehearsal set for Global Citizen Festival. It was great! My whole trip was a great first experience. I plan to visit during the Winter time next because I love the look of New York around the holidays. But for right now, I think the late Summer/ early Fall is the best time to visit the Big Apple.
