I love Ankara!! Ankara fashion has become a part of my style identity. In recent years I became more aware of the traditional Nigerian clothes me and my family wear for special occasions and it's become an alternate outlet from everyday-wear, for me. If you didn't already guess, I am Nigerian, specifically Igbo. In my culture, making clothes is common as is in other cultures of the world. But what makes the African fashion, in particular, so unique is that it's a great incorporation of tradition and modern style. The ankara fabric used to make traditional wear and modern ankara-wear is not the everyday material used in making basic shirts and pants. Because it's not as common as say shirt cotton, it is usually made by a tailor. I get really lucky because my mother gets sent fabric from Nigeria and I usually get to pick out my favorite patterns and design my own clothes to go with the fabric. Being able to design and see your creation come to life is a very cool feeling. I chose this pattern (seen on me below) because it reminded me so much of the tropical rain forest and H&M because the tropical vibe is one of their main themes for the Summer. It's a very nice color and it compliments the weather well. I was actually surprised that I was so drawn to this fabric because I don't wear much yellow but the other designs on it balance it out. My design was inspired from a ruffled off the shoulder ankara top I spotted on instagram and the mermaid tail bottom is my go-to-style for gowns because it has a nice shape and flow when worn. I wore this outfit not to long ago for a birthday celebration I attended and performed in. I did mention in an earlier post that I dance. I'm a part of an African dance group based in California. This is a before and after shot of my outfit. As you can see (above) I started off elegant with my hair pulled back and accessorized with my favorite gold necklace. ....And then after the performance (below), I look tired, my hair came out of its up-do, and I switched out my necklace with this simple but cute purple ankara clutch. I'm starting a mini-series called "The #TBT Outift." In which I will post pictures of some of my favorite past outfit pairings in celebration of Thursdays because that means it's almost the weekend! Now without further ado, my post. I had a great time and a lot of people complimented me on my outfit so I felt fabulous. I will most likely wear this dress again but with different accessories.
Till next time!
